6 quick content ideas for busy small business owners

Write about yourself

Share your origin story. Reflect on your passions, tell people why you started your business, your ideal clients, or recent noteworthy experiences. Personal touches like these make for engaging posts and can be quick to throw together because we are writing about what we know best. I know it can be hard writing about yourself, but sometimes inspiration can strike and you can have something really nice to share, that perhaps you wouldn’t when everything is ‘neat, tidy and scheduled’.

Talk about your partners, clients and collaborators

Highlight the people you work with. You don’t necessarily have to name names, but discussing who (or even what) helps your business can be interesting. Explain why you enjoy collaborating and show how you strengthen relationships.

Or even easier – share their content! We all love a bit of collaboration and support from each other. Has something interesting and relevant popped up in your feed – go find it and share it, highlighting your connection with the business or person who originally posted it.

Ask a question

Some of my best performing posts on LinkedIn have been text only posts which contain a question. I try to choose topics where I am genuinely keen to learn the answers or to get my followers thoughts. However, I admit the creation of them takes me seconds. I could consider creating a poll, if I had a bit of extra time, but often they are not necessary. Asking a simply questions has been great for engagement, discussions and reaching new possible connections. If you an, choose something topical (like AI!) and you will soon get some responses.

Share interesting or old content

All of the social media platforms allow some form of sharing. Share links or posts from thought leaders or professional bodies. Engaging with relevant content from your industry helps build your online community and showcases your expertise and commitment to staying up to date with what is happening.

Equally, f you have old content, such as previous education posts or blog posts, even email content, there is no reason not to share or reuse this content. You can give it an quick edit…if you have the time.

Share something fun

Be a bit spontaneous and snap some pictures. Use them to show what you are up to.

Or have a quick scoll through the camera roll and see if there is something funny, beautiful, or a bit interesting! Sometimes, a little ‘light relief’ can lead to the most engagement and reach. Try to make the photo relevant to your business to maintain brand consistency...but perhaps ‘frazzled you selfie’ apologising for being a bit quieter than usual could work well for showing the ‘real’ side of business.

Choose a photo that works for you.

Tap in to Awareness Days

I hate suggesting people rely on awareness days for content…but when we are busy…needs must.

Keep an eye out for ‘National Days’ or ‘National Weeks’, etc., that can be related to your industry or business. Additionally, consider personal milestones like your startup anniversary. These provide excellent opportunities for themed content...and work well if coincide with busy times.

Try video content

Embrace video content to connect with your audience. Whether it’s a quick update, a product demonstration, or a behind-the-scenes look, videos add variety to your content.

The great thing about social media videos is that they don’t have to be polished. Reels, TikToks, YouTube Shorts, Lives …they have all opened up the world of authentic, ‘real’ video. So don’t be afraid…record a quick video and post it!
