Blog topic ideas – What to write next…?

I’ll admit that after 9 weeks of blogging, this was the first week that I struggled a little to come up with a topic.
I always recommend to clients that they brainstorm regularly about topics, keep an ongoing list and schedule topics in advance, so that the ideas are always flowing. Hence, firstly, I had to tell myself off for not actually doing that!
However, it also inspired this post as I thought I could help some of you aspiring and new bloggers when you get a ‘writer’s block’ about topics.
10 Blog Topic Ideas
1. Introductions
You can introduce everything and anything in a blog post! If you are writing your first blog then you may want to introduce yourself and your background, as well as your business. You can also introduce members of your team. Don’t forget to introduce new product or services, competitions and changes to your business too.
2. Case studies
Do you have a wholesaler or first-time client that you could write a case study about? Or perhaps, record your ‘first time experience’ with a new product or service.
3. Photographs and images
A blog post doesn’t always have to be primarily words. Do you want to show off a certain collection of products, or perhaps you’ve attended a conference or exhibition. You can include photos in most blogs and can simply add short captions and descriptions.
4. Funny stories
Blogs are such a lovely way to share a bit of your personality and the fun side of your business. Loyal customers are often the most avid readers of a blog so appeal to them by sharing some insider stories. It is also likely to capture the attention of a few new readers.
5. Explanations – solve problems
Blogs are often read in order to gain information about a business to answer someone’s own queries or concerns, and to learn more about a profession or industry. Think about all the different areas of your business. What would clients like to know about them? Perhaps even ask some of your clients. You could run a series of blog posts all themed ‘Insider knowledge’ or ‘A sneak peek’…
6. ‘Top 10’ lists (or however many you can think of!)
Lists, often written in short chunks, are easily accessible. They are good to read and are a great way to share information and your top tips.
7. Link to national days/events
Whether it’s Valentine’s, St George’s Day, National Pie Week or Christmas…there are regular days and events which you can use to focus your blog post on and relate to your business. It doesn’t even have to be nationally recognised day, it could be your own birthday or the anniversary of your business.
8. Podcasts and videos
Be brave! Try a podcast or video. Anyone with a laptop, smartphone or tablet can make a recording. It doesn’t have to be done in a high-tech studio. As long as it is clear, it’ll be great. It also doesn’t have to be very long either.
9. Guest blogs
A traditional guest blog consists of asking someone else to write a blog post for you. This could be a loyal client or a professional in a similar line of work. Make sure you agree what you are expecting and set a suitable word count. You can also include guests ‘within’ your blog post, via a traditional Q&A style interview or a summary of a conversation.
10. Updates to earlier blog posts
You can write updates to old blog posts, particularly ones that have proven popular. Take a look at the comments people made and evaluate your blog, once in a while. Then see if you can ‘extend’ a post.
